News For You Article of the Week: "Immigrants Don't Use Dishwashers." Says who? ESL students read a features article in News For You describing what sociologists call a "quirk" among many immigrants: they don't like to use dishwashers. ESL students responded to this claim by writing letters to the editor.

Dear News for You Editor,

I am offended by your article, "Many Immigrants Won't Use Dishwashers." I don't see the point. Using a dishwasher is a normal thing for my family. We use clothes washers, dryers, computers and more. Many Spanish-speaking immigrants wash dishes by hand but we also use dishwashers. This article is full of generalizations that promote harmful stereotypes.

Sincerely, Melissa (Grade 8)

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to your article entitled, "Many Immigrants Won't Use Dishwashers." For me this is true because my mom doesn't believe in using a dishwasher. She doesn't see the point of using them. She thinks dishwashers just make people lazy and waste electricity. Despite my mom's feelings toward them, I would love to use a dishwasher. I feel lazy sometimes. I would cross my mother's line.

Sincerely, Thara (Grade 6)

Dear Editor, My name is Sabrina. In our ESL class we read your articles every week and this week we read the one about immigrants who won't use a dishwasher. I am an immigrant too and I don't use a dishwasher either. My mom taught me that it is better to wash dishes by hand than by machine. If you put the dishes in the dishwasher, they may not wash as well as by hand. This was a very good article. My family laughed when I read it to them, because we don't use dishwashers. Thanks!

Dear Editor, Hi, my name is Lorendy. I am 13 years old and I like to read newspapers. I read your article about immigrants who won't use dishwashers. This article was fun to read and was pretty funny. I learned a lot from this article. I learned that there are some people who use a lot of electronic appliances but not dishwashers. I also learned that in South Korea some people use refrigerators with built-in TVs. I had a lot of fun reading this article. Thank you for writing it. Sincerely, Lorendy
